Beginner’s Guide to Google Analytics for Landscapers

Most lawn care websites are missing one thing: clear data.

If you don’t know where your website visitors come from, how long they stay, or whether they’re filling out your quote form, you’re guessing. And guessing doesn’t grow your business.

Google Analytics is free. It’s powerful. And if you set it up right, it tells you exactly what’s working—and what’s wasting your time.

Here’s how lawn business owners can get started today without needing a tech degree.

Step 1: Set Up Google Analytics on Your Website

Before anything else, you need a Google Analytics account.

  1. Go to analytics.google.com
  2. Sign in with your Google account
  3. Click “Start Measuring”
  4. Set your Account Name (example: Smith Landscaping)
  5. Create a new Property (your website)
  6. Choose your time zone and currency

Once you’re done, you’ll get a Measurement ID—it looks like G-XXXXXXX. This is the tracking code.

To install it on your website:

  • If you’re using WordPress, use a plugin like Site Kit by Google
  • If you’re using Wix, Squarespace, or another builder, drop the tracking code in your site settings (look for “Analytics” or “Tracking”)

Done right, Google will start collecting visitor data in minutes.

Step 2: Understand Your Main Dashboard Metrics

Once you’re in, it’s easy to get lost. But don’t worry—you only need to focus on three things right now:

  1. Users
These are people who visit your site. More users = more potential customers.
  2. Engagement Time
How long people are staying. If they bounce after 5 seconds, your site isn’t holding their attention—or it’s not loading fast.
  3. Conversions (we’ll set this up in the next step)
This tells you if people are actually filling out your forms, not just browsing.

Don’t focus too much on vanity metrics like “Page Views.” Focus on what drives leads.

Step 3: Create Goals to Track Lead Form Submissions

You don’t just want visits. You want leads. So let’s track that.

If you have a “Contact Us” or “Free Quote” form, we can set up a goal to track submissions.

Option A: Thank You Page

If your form redirects to a “thank you” page (like /thank-you), tracking is simple.

  1. In Google Analytics, go to Admin > Events
  2. Click Create Event
  3. Set up a new event for page_view where page_location contains /thank-you

This will tell you how many people actually completed your form.

Option B: Button Click Tracking

If the form doesn’t redirect, you’ll need to set up a trigger in Google Tag Manager. That’s a bit more advanced—but if you use a website builder, look for options to track button clicks or form events directly.

Either way, set the goal. If you’re not tracking leads, you’re wasting your traffic.

Step 4: Segment Your Traffic by Source

You need to know where your best customers come from.

In your dashboard, check:

  • Organic Search – People who found you on Google
  • Paid Search – From ads
  • Direct – Typed in your URL or bookmarked
  • Referral – From another site
  • Social – From Facebook, Instagram, etc.

If you’re spending money on ads but getting 0 leads from paid search, something’s broken.

If you’re getting tons of traffic from Google but no calls, maybe your site isn’t converting well.

These insights help you stop wasting time on what doesn’t work—and double down on what does.

Data = Power (If You Use It)

Most lawn care businesses guess what’s working. That’s why most don’t grow.

If you can install one free tool that shows you where your customers are coming from, how they behave on your site, and which traffic turns into leads—why wouldn’t you?
